The Chillout Lounge Mix - Reflect

Reflecting on the year gone by with some quality new music. Wishing you all a wonderful new year ahead.

Layer J says about Trick, Part 2. “It’s what I was missing in my sets that I decided to produce. It’s a set of tracks for different moods. Everything from starting the night off with scaled of beats and rolling basslines to finishing it off with tracks such as ‘Orbit’ where its airy pads and dreamy arpeggios sets the album’s overall hopeful yet melancholic mood”. Cultivating a theme of self-expression, angst and deep introspection across their inaugural long player, Echoes of Memoria sees partners Ameli and Paul explore their most poignant sonic narrative to date, as they combine avant-garde electronic production techniques with neo-classical instrumentation and heart-wrenching storytelling to deliver a groundbreaking journey through sound on one of the most exciting young labels in electronic music. Berlin based producer Liam Mour (Ode To Youth) says “Can’t Get U Off My Mind is probably the most personal track I’ve made up until now. For the track, I’ve worked with my befriended collaborator Noraa, who is an incredible singer. Her voice carries the exact emotion this song is all about.” Rising star of the electronic scene Tom Marshall, aka Marsh, unveils Blue, the second single from his forthcoming artist album Endless. Blue features English singer-songwriter Leo Wood, Marsh showcases both his love of broken beats, and his characteristic melodic production style that consistently melds so seamlessly with Leo's dreamy vocals. One of my favourites il:lo are back with a beauty of a track on Nettwerk Music with a track called Shifted featuring Fractures, superb. Hot on the heels of his acclaimed debut EP released a few months ago on Stil vor Talent, Barcelona-based producer Gespona reemerges with his eagerly anticipated follow up, Magota. Comprising four tracks that move the cursor from stealth bass percolation to exotica-fuelled swagger, via injections of tendinous hip-hop-laced prog and heavily processed machine funk, this sophomore incursion from the Spanish talent does way better than simply keeping its promises: it opens on dimensions that were hinted at, but yet to unfold on Gespona's previous efforts. I had to include another Salski (Ready Mix Records) track / remix as I’m well into his sound at the moment, his remix of Lions Parade by the superb MKay is a stunner. Don't Forget To Breathe marks Trikk’s (Innervisions) first foray into “a true partnership”, evolving from the spark of an idea into a dossier intertwined with the twists and turns of the past few years. For one of the more brooding, pop-minded moments on his forthcoming debut album Fauna & Flora, Trikk brought in guitar and invited US singer-songwriter Jens Kuross alongside a rising R&B star to layer soulful vocals over an energising wave of jazzy darktronica, offering a thrilling first taste of what’s to come. As its tenth year draws to a close, Atomnation takes stock of another fine twelve months with the annual various artists' collection. Alongside existing standout singles, the compilation includes exclusives from Gidge, Sky Civilian, Blomelt & Narby, boys be kko, and label founder Applescal. While never losing sight of the dance floor, much of Atomnation's output looks way beyond and into painterly soundscapes, heartfelt emotions and captivating grooves that work as well in more personal and thoughtful settings - this VA is an essential overview of one of electronic music's most beloved labels. Hypnotic Vibes by David Cane Hardy was discovered by Matt from The Chill Out Tent crew (and the man behind the Nearest Faraway Place blog). He played it to Chris Coco who started playing with some reverb and subtle strings to take the original raw version into space. The result is here, a beautiful ambient moment. This is what David says about the tune: “I felt very strongly to record some of my guitar music in memory of the guitarist & singer-songwriter John Martyn. On the news of his passing I started to play the guitar in respect of his outstanding musicianship & experimented with reverb, echo & various guitar tunings.” The track will feature on The Chill Out Tent Ambient Vol. 1, a forthcoming compilation of ambient music. Folded Music is proud to present their first label compilation: Modern Music Vol. 1 curated by label head - Asta Hiroki. Showcasing some fantastic tracks from the year's releases to date including Fthmlss, Catch92, and Bon-Psy, alongside new exclusive new material from friends of the label Green Tee, Mick Destitute, PAWELG. and Fdluxx. The collection spans electronica, lofi beats, instrumental hip hop, ambient and jazztronica, acting as an insight into the world of Folded Music, and end of the year look back at some of the catalogue you might have missed. Northern Form (fka Andrew Rothschild) is a mainstay of Emancipator’s Loci Records imprint having released several albums to critical acclaim. The new single Azul continues to expand on this sonic signature, with the producer taking serene textures and sculpting them into a playful call and response structure around a thick drum beat and body rumbling sub bass. In October, Young Fathers - Alloysious Massaquoi, Kayus Bankole and G. Hastings, announced details of their brand new album Heavy Heavy and 2023 UK & Europe tour. Set for release on February 3rd 2023 via Ninja Tune, it’s the group’s fourth album and their first since 2018’s album Cocoa Sugar. The ten track project signals a renewed back-to-basics approach, just the three of them in their basement studio, some equipment and microphones: everything always plugged in, everything always in reach. Tim Angrave - Reprise (Numen Records) is an evolving ambient / electronic track inspired by positive feedback loops and repeating memorable musical moments. Music can remind us of distinctive times and situations and take us back there instantly. Following the release of the Cabin In The Woods compilation, Incroyable Music now welcome a host of artists to offer up their take on the original works. Featuring artists include Fort Romeau, Deetron, Andre Lodemann, Sebastian Mullaert & Francesco Tristano. Sebastian Mullaert produces an intelligent version of Sapois Blues which closes the show with a stripped back Tube Tool version. Belau's new song Unimaginable features the blissful vocals of Sarah Jay Hawley (female vocalist of Massive Attack's Mezzanine album). Timothy and the Apocalypse’s track Engine Check is out now with remixes by Tim Angrave and singer / songwriter, beat-maker, mixer, remixer 9Theory. Youth Novels, the Poland based duo, released their lead single Blue from the third studio EP, which after doing very well on Spotify, the duo decided to release a new version of the song, featuring a wonderful collaboration with the very talented German artist, producer and composer Niklas Paschburg who has been on this podcast a lot. Blue (Rework) combines driving, repetitive rhythms typical for Niklas Paschburg electronic sounds with catchy melodies and ethereal vocals of the Youth Novels duo. The electronic sound with soft beats and cinematic elements make it perfect for Crime TV shows and films.
