The Chillout Lounge Mix - Sunscreem
Very special episode celebrating a remix release on Numen Records of the 90s classic Perfect Motion by the sublime Sunscreem. Also thanks to 3rd Avenue and Alex Donofrio for releasing Illuminate and to the superb remixers, Different Ray, Fabian Balino and Harmonious.
Sunscreem (Lucia Holm and Paul Carnell) have made numerous memorable hits since the 90s and through to the 21st century as well as performing concerts and being remixed by numerous established artists / producers including Leftfield, Carl Cox, Push, Faithless, Matt Darey, Slam, X-Press 2, Robbie Rivera, K-Klass, Armand Van Helden among others. Perfect Motion has a deep meaning for Tim Angrave and Alister Luckett (Alindamix) who when remixing drew on memories of good times in the 90s, blended with an ambient / electronic modern sunset feel, and a melancholic poetic soundscape. This crossover of happy and sad, evolving story / backdrop to the timeless and beautiful vocals of Lucia gives the track a durability and versatility for even more decades to come. Following Rohne's debut release largely inspired by worldly travels and capturing ideas on the move, a dedication to creating stillness through a simple life unfolded. Days of isolation, walks in the forest, and studio time stood as the foundation to explore his love of philosophy and the boundaries of creativity. Now nearly three years since his debut, the natural result is his second album, Forms - the blooming of a bond between Rohne, his art, and the world around him. Drawing influences from a wide range of genres, the record acts as a gentle departure from his debut release, and the start down a long road of sonic exploration. Carving out a genre-defying space for themselves in our musical landscape, Elder Island get remixed superbly by Timedance owner Batu who is also a well respected DJ, Mixmag ranked him as one of their top 20 DJs in 2017. Electronica duo BYLJA are releasing a vinyl of their debut EP Sojourn that they introduced last year. On the vinyl, listeners will find the previously released singles, plus their new bonus track ‚Burn. BYLJA uses their distinct mixture of textural ambient soundscapes and hard-hitting beats, to create a sonic carpet of energetic, yet meditative, electronica. The play between heavily delayed electric guitar, a huge variety of synthesizers and mesmerizing drums result in a chill, ambient electronica track that is chill, forceful and beautiful at the same time. Awe Kid explores ideas of transhumanism, evolution and digital immortality on Body Logic, a fantastically lush new album for Atomnation. The immersive 10 track record plays with organic, breathing textures punctuated by moments of digital unrealness to result in an album permeated with a dream-like quality. Really enjoy making music with the utterly gifted Alex Donofrio who not only co-produced Illuminate (3rd Avenue) but also sang the vocals, expect a lot more from Alex in the near future. Time is a track from London based electronic artists Ross K and Noé Solange. This mesmerizing piece takes you on an introspective journey between finding solace in stillness whilst yearning for change. “It’s about feeling lost in a fast-paced world and taking comfort in slowing down, yet desperate to find direction and move forward.” The super gifted Chris Zippel has a wonderful two track EP coming out on Stripped Recordings called Sunbird | Moonbird, both well worth checking out but Moonbird fitted best in this mix. KIDSØ (Embassy Of Music) are curious experiment that combines talent of two drummers, Moritz Grassinger and Martin Schneider, who focus on creating rhythms & beats with all kinds of percussions. Analog instruments with effect-racks, sounds & samples are shredded and crafted into new melodies. TOO is both HVOB's harshest and softest album to date. In terms of sound, Anna Müller and Paul Wallner explore a space of extremes between departure and retreat, between determination and self-doubt. Erik Satie’s (Deutsche Grammophon) art was serious, but his methods were playful and experimental. Bar lines and metre? Boring. Symphonies and sonatas? Give the audience Gymnopedies and Gnossienes. Sit in concert-hall silence to listen? How about writing ‘furniture music’ to soften the edges of everyday life instead. The French composer loved enigmatic titles and cryptic performance instructions, he was the self-styled ‘phonometrician’ who wrote music ‘in the shape of a pear’ and directed pianists to play ‘like a nightingale with toothache’. Humour and wit were never far away, whether ironic, absurd, satirical, strange, rebellious, mischievous or joyful. With previous compositions from the likes of Henrik Schwarz, Christian Löffler, Dominik Eulberg Monolink, Sascha Braemer, and TWO LANES, part three boasts three spellbinding tracks from the audio architects Pantha du Prince, Kid Francescoli and Grandbrothers. L’attente is the brand new eight tracks album on Lemongrassmusic from French musician and producer Eskadet (Stéphane Klepper) who proposes a spiritual travel across questions about life, destiny (if there is one…), complexity, doubts, dreams, friendship, love; but always with the same final target: appeasement, hope, joy, and beauty. Ólafur Arnalds (Erased Tapes) is a multi-instrumentalist and producer from Mosfellsbær, Iceland. He mixes strings and piano with loops and beats, a sound ranging from ambient/electronic to atmospheric pop, he is also one half of the duo Kiasmos. Salt Of Sound are Anita and Ben who make beautiful ambient and emotional music, particularly enjoyed their latest album Made Whole. Very special final track by Penguin Cafe who are back with a lovingly produced 10th anniversary edition of their debut album A Matter of Life… 2021. Besides being completely remastered and pressed on vinyl for the very first time, the record also features a brand new 2021 recording of lead single Harry Piers, a song commemorating Arthur Jeffes’ late father and PCO founder Simon Jeffes.“I originally wrote Harry Piers to play at my dad’s memorial service 24 years ago, and I've played it at the end of pretty much every gig (and soundcheck) we’ve done since, so I’ve probably played it hundreds if not thousands of times since we originally released A Matter of Life... So when we decided to reissue the album, Robert and I both felt it would be fun to record an up-to-date version of this song, because it has changed over time and it continues to evolve. So while this is still very much the same tune, I think it has a lot more nuance and detail that reflect the years that have passed since 2011,” Arthur explains.
